Pregnant and craving your morning cup of coffee or tea? You’re not alone! For many moms-to-be, that first sip feels like a warm hug — but the question always lingers: Is it safe?
Here’s some good news — you don’t have to give up coffee or tea completely during pregnancy! The key is moderation.
How Much Caffeine Is Safe in Pregnancy?
Research shows that keeping your caffeine intake below 200 mg per day is considered safe. That’s roughly one small cup of coffee or two small cups of tea in a day.
Remember, caffeine doesn’t just come from your beverage — it’s also found in chocolate, cola, and certain energy drinks. So, it’s best to keep track of your total daily intake.
What About Herbal Teas?
Herbal teas can be a soothing alternative, but not all are pregnancy-friendly. Stick to mild and safe options like:
Lemon tea 🍋
Ginger tea 🌿
Avoid strong herbs like licorice root (often spelled Lycoris root), as it may not be safe during pregnancy. Always check the ingredients list before sipping.
The Bottom Line
A warm cup of tea or coffee can still be part of your pregnancy routine — just keep it light and balanced. Stay hydrated, eat well, and enjoy these little comforts without guilt.
